After a disappointing season with the Red Sox where he posted a 4.57 ERA and lost out on a postseason start for what went on to be a World Series winning run, Dempster has chosen to sit out the 2014 season.
As reported by FOX Sports, Dempster has cited “physical reasons” and a “desire to spend time with his kids” as the main reasons for his decision.
“I don’t feel like I am capable of performing to the ability and standard that I am accustomed to,” Dempster told Rosenthal. “I feel it’s in the best interest of both the club but most importantly myself to step away from playing baseball at this time. The time is right. I’m not saying retirement but I definitely won’t be playing this season.”
Dempster signed a 2-year $26.5 million deal last off season with the Sox. He will be put on the restricted list, and obviously won’t be getting that $13.25 million he stood to make this year. The Red Sox will be geared to make some moves.
