Day 2 of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Women’s Basketball Championship was a fun, action packed day of competitive basketball.
Game 1: #5 Iowa State vs. #4 Oklahoma State
Iowa State came out swinging and quickly took a 12-2 lead before Oklahoma State head coach Jim Littell called a timeout. Whatever he said to his players worked because the Cowgirls went on a run of their own scoring the next 12 points to take a 14-12 lead. But the Cyclones went on a 19-12 run to take a 37-30 lead into halftime.
At the beginning of the 2nd half the Cyclones looked a step slow as the Cowgirls went on 9-0 run quickly turning their seven point deficit into a two point lead and never looking back. The Cowgirls were lead by Brittany Martin who had 17 points and Brittany Atkins and Tiffany Bias who each added 14. Oklahoma State will meet #1 seeded Baylor in the first semifinal game.
Game 2: #8 Kansas vs. #1 Baylor
In the first blowout of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Women’s Championship, Baylor defeated Kansas 81-47 to advance to the semifinals. The Lady Bears were led by freshman forward Nina Davis who finished with 20 points and 7 rebounds. Senior guard Odyssey Sims had 15 points while Khadijah Cave added 10. Only five players scored for Kansas, Chelsea Gardner finished with 21 points while Dakota Gonzalez added 10. The Lady Bears will play Oklahoma State in Sunday’s first semifinal game.
Game 3: #7 TCU vs. #2 West Virginia
Despite a strong performance from Zahna Medley, scoring 33 points, TCU fell to #2 seed Western Virginia 67-59. This is West Virginia’s first tournament win as a member of the Big 12. They will play the winner of tonight’s Texas/Oklahoma game in tomorrow’s second semifinal.
Game 4: #3 Texas vs. #6 Oklahoma
In a classic rivalry game between Texas and Oklahoma, the Longhorns came out victorious wining 82-72. Both teams came out with the type of intensity that you only see in March and that you only see in a rivalry game. Despite a last minute run from Oklahoma and 21 points from Aaryn Ellenburg, Texas held off to win Coach Aston’s first Big 12 Tournament game. They will advance to the semifinals where they will meet the #2 seeded West Virginia Mountaineers.
