The ACC will not punish Syracuse quarterback Terrel Hunt for punching Villanova linebacker Dillon Lucas on the ground. Hunt was ejected from the game for the action in Friday night’s season-opener.
According to NCAA rules, “When a player is disqualified from the game due to a flagrant personal foul, that team’s conference shall automatically initiate a video review for possible additional sanctions before the next scheduled game.” The ACC spokesperson said that following their review, the officials made the correct call, the process taken by Syracuse was appropriate, so an additional punishment was not needed.
After the game, head coach Scott Shafer addressed the incident, saying that the team would not punish Hunt and that competitive football players are bound to react like that sometimes.
“It’s an emotional game and if you’ve never played it, you don’t know what it’s like to get frickin’ pummeled,” Shafer said. “There are people on your back and people talking to you and you react. We’ve all done it.”
On Saturday. SU Athletics released a written statement from Shafer: “Terrel and I have talked regarding his flagrant penalty (vs. Villanova) and he fully understands the behavior is not condoned and regrets his action.”
