The NFL has gone out of their way to try to protect players on the field. Many rules have been adjusted with the hopes of preventing head injuries but this has a major effect on players injuring other parts of their bodies, specifically their knees.
Rob Gronkowski explained to Jim Rome on Showtime, why he would rather suffer a concussion than tearing up his knee.
“Uh, so if we’re sitting here and I had to choose, would I want a concussion right now or my knee blown out, I’m going to say a concussion. Why would I want to sit there for eight months and not do anything, when with a concussion I’ll just wake up and I’ll be ready to go again.”
Its been proven that concussions play a major role in memory loss but Gronk doesn’t seem to care much about that.
“That happens all the time. I don’t even know how I got to my hotel last night.”
This isn’t the first time Gronk has made this stance. Back in 2014, while rehabbing from a torn ACL, Gronk acknowledged he rather have concussion over the knee issue he was dealing with.
This is a very tough one for me. I have personally have suffered a major knee injury and it was very challenging at time to over come the mental and physical barriers but at the end of the day I am able to live a normal life post injury. With a head injury, Gronk would be able to return to the field much sooner but how much damage are you doing to yourself in the long run? How many years could a concussion take off of your life? I guess it comes down to what you value more, your current profession or your way of life after you hang up the shoulder pads and cleats.
