Back in April, 50-year old Ronald Savage came forth in an interview with Daily News alleging that he had been sexually abused by Afrika Bambaataa, hip hop legend and leader of the Universal Zulu Nation. Savage stated that he was sexually molested by Bambaataa at the age of 15. Since his revelation, three more men have emerged claiming to be victims of Bambaataa’s abuse as well. Adding fuel to the fire, Shamsideen Shariyf Ali Bey, reportedly the Zulu Nation leader’s bodyguard, came forth in a radio interview stating that he had “walked in on stuff”.
Prior to the sit-down with FOX5’s Lisa Evers, Bambaataa had addressed the accusations via written statements and a radio interview. He maintains his innocence and says he feels as though there is motive behind the recent allegations. He states “there could be shakeups and certain things people might’ve wanted.”
There will be no criminal investigation into the alleged incidents as the statute of limitations has run out. Under New York law, victims of sexual abuse are not allowed to press charges after they turn 23 years of age. This brings about the debate of whether or not the statute of limitations should be revised or completely discontinued.
