Greg Hardy was arrested last September in Dallas when police found cocaine in his car. TMZ Sports got footage of the arrest and what happens is a very interesting interaction between Hardy and the cops.
The police are clearly aware that he plays football. You can overhear one of the cops saying, “he’s a Cowboys player, so we have to not stir anything up. And he’s very big and fit.” For the record Hardy and his female companion were very polite when dealing with the officers when he was detained.
During questioning Hardy proceeds to tell the officers he was at a party the previous night and he got drunk. He was talking to NFL guys trying to get a job and someone could have slipped him the drugs without his knowledge.
There is a lot to unpack here. Starting with the cops and their fetishization of Hardy, referencing his size and level of fitness. Also that he’s a Cowboys player and they don’t want to stir anything up. That says a lot about the place sports holds in this country and the individuals who play them.
Then there is Hardy who seems convinced that this was a set up. We could possibly buy the story that someone slipped you something, but how did it end up in your wallet? Nope.
Hardy reached a plea deal and was sentenced to two years probation.
