In what was the final 100m race of his career, Usain Bolt was NOT the first one across the finish line.
35-year old American sprinter Justin Gatlin shocked the Jamaican, and no doubt the world, in the 100 meter dash final at the World Championships in London.
Gatlin crossed the line in his season’s best 9.92 seconds. He was followed by fellow American Christian Coleman in 9.94s while Bolt settled for bronze in 9.95s.
Before anyone calls it a fluke, 9.95s was Bolt’s season’s best.
Bolt’s historic career will come to a close after he competes in the 4×100 meter relay next Saturday. The Jamaican who won 3 straight Olympic gold medals each in the 100m and 200m races still has a chance to go out on top.
