‘Show them what crazy dreams can do.’
That’s Nike’s newest tag line for their latest commercial featuring Serena Williams and today’s greatest female athletes completing amazing feats in sports.
You can add Toni Harris to that list.
Who is Toni Harris?
On Tuesday, Toni Harris became the first female football player to sign a letter of intent to play college football.
Harris, who attends East Los Angeles College, a 2-year community college, signed a letter of intent to play college football for Central Methodist University in Fayette, MO.
Central Methodist is an NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletic) program school.
She was already the first female football player in East Los Angeles College Football history.
She also became the first female football player to appear in a Super Bowl commercial, when she appeared in a Toyota ad on Super Bowl Sunday.
To top it all off, she was offered a full-ride scholarship to play safety for Central Methodist.
Having grown up in Detroit, Michigan, Harris has been a fighter and a survivor throughout her entire life.
She has already overcome cancer and having grown up in foster care, she became the first member of her family to have graduated high school and attend college.
Harris has taken an interest to football since she was 4 years old and hopes to one day reach her goal of becoming the first female player in the NFL.
She says,
“If it doesn’t happen, I can just pave the way for another little girl to come out and play — or even start a women’s NFL.”
For now she will attend Central Methodist, play football, and look to earn her degree in Criminal Justice.
We salute Toni.
