A former NFL journeyman and Reseda Cleveland High School athlete was found not guilty of murdering his mother Alicia Benson who had recently taken him in after his NFL career fizzled out.
The murder took place almost 3 years ago, deputies responded to a call of distress made by another individual who witnessed the argument and subsequent beating of Alicia Benson at the hands of De’von Hall. There were no weapons used, De’von Hall according to the witness beat and stomped his mother in the midst of an argument and scuffle the two had.
When authorities attempted to bring De’von Hall he fought three deputies before finally being secured, he was taken into custody and not long after was charged with the murder of his mother Alicia Benson.
De’von Hall suffered from mental illness for years, some close to the family believe it shortened his NFL career, which then caused him to spiral out of control at a more rapid pace. Family and friends of De’von Hall in an interview back in 2017 said Hall wore earphones at times to drown out voices he claimed to hear inside his head.
De’von Hall’s mental issues are what likely led to L.A. County Superior Court Judge Lauren Weis finding Hall not guilty by reason of insanity.
De’von Hall will now be committed to a mental institute to receive treatment for his mental illness, according to Hall’s public defender Alicia Benson would have preferred her son receive the help he needs instead of going to prison if she could speak.
