Jacksonville Jaguars, and former FSU standout LB Telvin Smith is fed up with NFL players charging children from low income areas to attend their football camps, and he’s letting them know:
I, for one agree with everything Smith laid out. NFL players are in positions to immediately capitalize on their football experience once they get into the league, by teaching kids the game the same way they learned it. As we know, many families aren’t in a position to come up with even small amounts of extra money to send them…and as we also know (or should know), no child should be denied things like this simply because their parents aren’t in position to pay.
Smith highlights an important fact. Many players make it but, and forgot what it was like to look up to some of their heroes. They also forgot what it was like if they couldn’t afford to attend the elite camps put on by those same heroes.
If more athletes start thinking like Telvin Smith, many more underprivileged kids will thrive, & this attitude isn’t exclusive to football camps either.
We all should continue to look for more ways to help the kids we know need it; this is just one of many.
