ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith sparked a wave of reactions on X, formerly known as Twitter, after mistakenly referring to Houston Texans wide receiver Christian Kirk as conservative activist Charlie Kirk during a live broadcast Tuesday.
The slip-up occurred on “First Take” as Smith discussed the Texans’ playoff performance against the Kansas City Chiefs.
“We saw Charlie Kirk catch eight receptions for 144 yards,” Smith said, before quickly correcting himself: “I apologize. Oh my God. Christian Kirk.”
Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, was assassinated in September 2025 at age 31, leaving behind a wife and two young children. Smith had previously condemned those celebrating Kirk’s death on air, calling it “shameful” and “inhumane.” The mix-up, coming months after those comments, amplified the awkwardness, with users on X labeling it everything from a “Freudian slip” to “the worst slip-up in media history.”

X users quickly piled on, blending humor, criticism and disbelief. “The worst slip up in media history. Stephen A Smith calls Christian Kirk, Charlie Kirk,” posted @crazyclipsonly, whose video clip garnered over 27,000 views. Another user, @oddible_ai, called it “WILD: Insane,” sharing footage of the moment that drew thousands of engagements.
Some saw deeper implications amid the politically charged context of Charlie Kirk’s death. “@TruthZone wrote: ‘They are mocking everyone at this point,’ suggesting the error was no accident, with the post including a clip and hashtags like #stephenasmith and #charliekirk.” Politics-focused account @PolitlcsUS shared: “WATCH: Stephen A. Smith mistakes Christian Kirk, the NFL player, for Charlie Kirk,” amassing nearly 8,000 views.
Sports fans expressed frustration over the disrespect to the athlete. “The disrespect on Christian Kirk’s name is insane… there’s no reason for Stephen A Smith to make that kind of mistake😭,” posted @TexasDiegs, a Texas Tech alum and sports enthusiast. Meanwhile, @Dark0Thirty quipped: “Stephan A smith just called Christain Kirk , Charlie Kirk by accident on national television lmao,” capturing the lighter side of the viral moment.
The incident echoes Smith’s earlier passionate monologues on Charlie Kirk’s killing, where he blasted online celebrations as “heinous” and refused to apologize for his stance. Neither Smith nor ESPN immediately responded to requests for comment.
As the clip circulated widely, it underscored the intersection of sports, politics and media mishaps in the digital age, with X serving as the real-time courtroom for public judgment. The Texans, fresh off their win, advance in the playoffs, where Christian Kirk’s actual on-field contributions remain the focus for fans.
