When the San Francisco 49ers resign quarterback Alex Smith to a one-year deal I thought it was a dumb decision. When Smith went 2-for-7 for 10 yards against the Saints last Friday that resigning looked even dumber.

And rookie QB Colin Kaepernick didn’t look any better in his debut, granted it was just the first preseason game but it’s obvious the 49ers need help grooming the young QBs. So I’m not surprised the 49ers are looking for a veteran quarterback to help out Kaepernick and Smith. I am surprised that the call up Daunte Culpepper.

Culpepper worked out for some 30 minutes Monday for the 49ers throwing passes to tight end Nate Lawrie. The 49ers are expected to sign Culpepper, according to ProFootballTalk.com.

Although Culpepper has been out of the league for two years, Lawrie believes Daunte got his mojo back.

“I was catching balls for him during the workout, and he was throwing it around pretty good. He’s spinning it well,” said Lawrie, who signed a one-year deal with San Francisco on Sunday. “Daunte’s got a ton of experience. He’s got a lot of
success in this league. And the guy can play, he can throw the ball. That’s what it all boils down to.”

Of course Lawrie has a little bit more faith in Daunte than others because the two played together last year with the United Football League’s Sacramento Mountain Lions. But as we all know the NFL is totally different from the UFL. And the last time we saw Daunte in a NFL uniform he was being bench in favor of the backup quarterback with the Detroit Lions.

If the 49ers do sign Daunte it’ll be interesting to see if the 49ers get the Daunte from 2004 or the Daunte from 2008.
