Tiger Woods & Lebron James Rated Worst Athlete Tippers

by Robert Littal | Posted on Wednesday, August 17th, 2011

I have always been conflicted about tipping.

On the one hand tipping is “OPTIONAL”, so if you don’t want to tip you shouldn’t be criticized for it.  On the flip side a lot of people who work in certain establishments need tips to justify the amount of work they are doing.

When you are rich I guess people expect you to tip more, but once again it is OPTIONAL.

I probably shouldn’t laugh at this Tiger Woods story, but it is pretty hilarious, the Lebron story made me chuckle as well.

Woods, despite a net worth of $500 million, is the worst celebrity tipper in America. Eldrick’s excuse: He never carries cash. Woods is said to have made a woman in Las Vegas tip for him when they went out. While playing $10,000-a-hand blackjack, Tiger re-pocketed a $5 tip after realizing he tipped her early in the night.

The golfer isn’t the only sports star making the Miami New Times Short Order blog list of “Top Ten Cheapest Celebrity Tippers.”

LeBron James was one of them. The King was given a gift from the gods in the form of basketball talent, but leaving a gratuity is a different story. James, with a net worth of $120 million, turns into a cheapskate when the bill arrives. The Miami Heat star is ranked fourth on the New Times list, thanks in part to a generous $10 tip on a $800 bill from a Cleveland steak house he made stay open until 4 a.m.

They obviously did not count the money Tiger spent on Porn stars because if they did he would never be on this list.  I have heard stories about Tiger being cheap, not so much Lebron, so he might have just gotten a raw deal based of f one story.

I will stick with the tried and true 10% and 5% if you don’t refill my drink in a timely manner.

Here is the entire list of worst celebrity tippers.

Top Ten Cheapest Celebrity Tippers
1.) Tiger Woods: Claims he never carries cash.
2.) Madonna: Once left an $18 tip on a $400 bill.
3.) Barbra Streisand: Famous for leaving $10 tip for $457 tab.
4.) LeBron James: Didn’t ever get tipping talents, left $10 on an $800 bill.
5.) Jeremy Piven: Left signed Entourage DVD as tip.
6.) Usher: Once left his autograph as a tip.
7.) Mariah Carey: Famous for diva demands and no tips!
8.) Sean Penn: Left $0 on a $450 tab in New Orleans.
9.) Bill Cosby: Once left a $3 tip on a $350 bill
10.) Rachael Ray: Promotes less than 20 percent tip on her show.

I’ve always found tipping stories somewhat shaky. Usually you only hear a story when someone tips poorly because the server is pissed and wants to make em look bad. But we never hear the other side, which could be that the service was horrible and that’s why the athlete/entertainer tipped poorly.

you have to be kidding me. that is a disgrace, ya cheap bastard.

(i’m not in the service industry so it’s not like it’s personal for me but people who tip 10% at the most deserve to have their food shit in)

    • shell m says:

Then u should really stick 2 goin 2 mcdonalds..hear u don’t have 2 tip there..if it wasn’t 4 us severs who make well below the minuim wages..in some states it 2.13 an hour..so we rely on tips..and of course I know I have the option 2 find another job..but then there would only b fast food places 2 dine @..u cheap ass..stop tipping like it the 50′s..if the server is good 2 u..show them!! Damn..

  4. Lown says:

LOL you bums better start tipping or you’ll be eating spit burgers

  5. Dan-O says:

I work as a server right now to help pay for school. We get paid $2.13 an hour, which means that we pretty much live off of the generosity(or lack there of, in some cases) of the people we serve.. And 18% is the standard tip, if you enjoyed your time. If you didn’t then that is one thing, but if you had a good time and still give 10%, that is a pretty dick move.

  6. Fat Boy Slim says:

So let’s see when I go out to eat, and it’s 6 or more…gratuity is already part of the bill. So if LeBron spent $800 plus in a steak house, chances are it was for quite a few people, not just him and his woman…so wouldn’t the tip already be included?

    • pretty simple says:

fine dining establishments usually don’t include the gratuity, especially when they assume the customer is worth enough to know how to tip.

  7. free says:

Yeah because we don’t have any assholes and douche bags working the food service industry. These are the same people that put shit in your food whether you tip them good or not, same people that will drop your steak on the floor when you send it back for more cooking if it’s too rare for your taste? I bet you if any celebrity walked into a restaurant, the waiting staff most likely will feel entitled for a tip that is more than 20%,and if they don’t get it they will put any story out.

    • Dan-O says:

Have you ever worked in a restaurant before? Because I assure you, nothing like that ever happens. You have seen Waiting way too many times.

  8. free says:

This is the only industry were customers have to pay someone else’s employees.

    • Whaaa says:

Servers are more like sub-contractors in that sense. You are hiring them to wait on you. You are their boss. They work for the restaurant, but at the end of the day the customer runs the show and is the boss of everyone in a restaurant.

      • White person says:

You clearly have never taken an employment law class… And if my work is being sub contracted out, you should lay down your tip at the beginning of the meal. You never have the option to just not pay your employees. nigger

  9. Cantbuyclass says:

This article confirms the stereotype that black people are generally bad tippers. Even the author of the article is siding with the athletes. What’s wrong with you? What’s so difficult to understand about our society? It may be legally *optional*, but it’s understood by our society (USA) that servers, bartenders, etc make less hourly wages which are supposed to be offset by the customer’s tips. It’s just the way it is. By not tipping, you’re not making a statement, nor helping change anything. You’re screwing someone who is just trying to make a living, and also making yourself look like an ignorant assh0le.

The worst part is, in this case (b/c there’s many more groups guilty here), you’re propagating the ‘black people are bad tippers’ stereotype, which makes people in the service industry dread/hate serving you. Which is a shame because not all black people are bad tippers, but I bet they get less service in general because of people like you.

And yes, it is the waitstaff’s choice to work in that industry, but there’s usually reasons for it and you shouldn’t judge them based on their job, nor should you use your ignorance as an excuse to punish them for it.

20% for good service, 15-18% for decent service, 10% for ok/bad (and maybe talk to a manager if it’s that bad, b/c it never should be). What’s so f*cking difficult about that?

  10. I beloved up to you’ll obtain carried out proper here. The caricature is attractive, your authored material stylish. however, you command get got an shakiness over that you want be delivering the following. sick certainly come more previously again since exactly the similar just about a lot steadily inside of case you defend this increase.

  11. Amy says:

Don’t go out if you don’t plan to tip the 20%!

    Period.

It’s not an option so much as it is just ethical (the servers are TAXED on their sales and make far below min wage – as in $3-$5 per hour). It’s just proper, classy, polite, customary and decent.

Non tipper tightwads make me sick. I think the celebs should be bashed endlessly and mercilessly for it and made a public example. This article should be posted everywhere.

I was in the service biz years back. I am not rich – far from it – but 20% is my base tip whenever I go out. I NEVER forget or neglect to tip. If the service is exceptional I easily go up as high as 50% or so.

I have no respect for these tightwad losers. I will never spend money on their events, CD’s, movies…

If you are a celeb you should just over compensate just to play it safe. Hell, you are doing better than most and are blessed – so spread the blessing…

BTW – some of these are the same people who believe in the redistribution of wealth, higher taxes for the funding of entitlement programs, etc for folks who aren’t working or poor – but the rich celebs, themselves, refuse to tip the under paid person who works their ass off for them…

These icky celebs blather on and on during the endless award shows – or whenever they can shove their over exposed narcissistic face in front of a camera – and they whine ceaselesly about compassion toward a strawman population of some special interest cause! Then, however, to a real human who is struggling to make ends meet these same celebs dismiss all the effort of an actual needy person by not tipping… whatever. Losers, phonies, hypocrites – I hope karma finds them – and brands them appropriately.

Madonna the ol’ hose bag, Sean the out of touch foolish phony, Tiger the ho’monger, Barbara still-ugly-after-all-these-years – only just more washed up, Mariah with the annoying dog whistle voice, No-talent-Piven, Over inflated Lebraun and the rest of them aren’t even worthy of kissing their server’s butt!

I dispise tight wads and especially when they are hypocrites too!

  12. missy says:

I also used to work in a restaurant and I agree that you shouldn’t go out to eat unless you plan on tipping at least 18% because here’s the thing- you enjoy going out to restaurants, right? If you tip poorly, the staff will be unhappy. If the staff is unhappy, you will, at least, get poor service but more likely, they will quit. (FYI- Most servers/bartenders are well aware of the fact that giving poor service will not benefit them since they live off of tips.) Eventually no one will want to work in that restaurant and it will have to close.
Moral of the story- the staff of restaurants make it possible for you to even go out to eat in the first place so thank them in the form of a good tip!!
p.s. Most of the servers and bartenders these days are college educated but are unable to find jobs in their field right now due to the economy.
