Everyone wants to fight Floyd Mayweather and there are two reasons why.
If you are the fighter who finally beats Mayweather you become a superstar overnight and the second reason is simple straight cash homie. Mayweather’s opponents on average make more money than any B-side fighter in boxing. If I was a boxer I could call him out as well.
The only problem is Mayweather only fights once or twice a year, so he is extremely careful on who he chooses as an opponent.
There are five fighters who are being considered if Mayweather decides to fight in the Spring. Here they are in the order I believe Mayweather’s team has them in.
1- Robert Guerrero
Guerrero has called out Mayweather for almost two years, but didn’t have the credentials to back it up. That changed when Guerrero beat up Andre Berto in a fight of the year candidate this past Saturday.
Even though his résumé at Welterweight is a still a bit light he has a couple of things in his favor. People will remember his slugfest against Berto and see him as a credible threat to Mayweather. He also has an interesting backstory having to give up boxing for a while to care for his wife who was diagnosis with Leukemia.
Lastly, Mayweather may see him as the easiest opponent to make the most money off and since his name is Money Mayweather this is the matchup I expect to see in the Spring.
2- Canelo Alvarez
Speaking of money this would be fight that would bring in the most (besides a Pacquiao fight more on that later). Canelo is a huge star in his own right and would be seen as a credible threat to Mayweather.
Mayweather might see that threat as a bit too much and go for the easier fight in Guerrero. If Mayweather truly wants to cash out with the biggest money fight of 2013 then Alvarez would be the choice.
3- Miguel Cotto
If Cotto was to win his fight this weekend against Austin Trout impressively, there could be rumblings about a rematch with Mayweather.
Cotto did something many haven’t done against Mayweather, he won some clear rounds. The promotion did huge numbers and while I don’t think the world is clamoring for a rematch if Cotto were to knock out Trout in spectacular fashion that could change.
4- Tim Bradley
There have been reports that Mayweather had a meeting with Bob Arum about a possible Tim Bradley fight. The hook being Mayweather would fight the guy who beat Pacquiao. No one wants to see this fight mainly because no one likes to see Tim Bradley fight.
5- Manny Pacquiao
Not happening.
