Jets 2nd round pick Geno Smith does not have an agent at this time, so Smith is currently solely responsible for managing his image and getting his point across.
After not being selected until the 2nd round, and firing his previous agents, Smith’s image and reputation have taken a serious hit as of late.
Smith though refuses to allow his critics to get him down, and during a recent interview with Thacover2, address concerns and rumors about his attitude and whether or not he’s a diva.
“I don’t worry about what people say — my skin is pretty thick,” Smith told USA TODAY Sports. “I’ve never been in trouble.”
Smith denied a Yahoo Sports report that suggested he spent time in meetings with NFL coaches and exec Tweeting on his phone, and being disengaged from the whole pre-draft process.
“That’s not true,” said Smith flatly. “I got strong remarks from all the teams I visited with. … I couldn’t care less what’s coming out in the media because I know what’s true.”
Smith did admit that he shouldn’t have skipped the Senior Bowl, but that was on the advice of the agents he had at the time.
“It was a decision I ultimately made,” Smith said. “My first instinct is always to go out and compete. I’m a competitor. It’s one of those things where I trusted those guys. They advised me that it may have been best for me not to go.”
Geno Smith is currently trying to shed the label that he’s a diva or a malcontent, and at this time, express that he just wants to get to work and compete.
“What more can you ask for?” Smith said. “As of right now, my role as a rookie quarterback is to be a sponge.
“I have a goal in mind. I’m going to work hard towards it. And I’m just going to do all the things I think are necessary for me to eventually be one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL.”
He may not be a diva, but he obviously cares what people think, and to extent, he’s supposed to care. At this point all Geno Smith can do is work hard, and change people’s opinions or outlooks on him.
