Goran Dragic wants out of Phoenix.
Earlier Wednesday when speaking of the Suns’ front office, he said, “I don’t trust them anymore.”
The Sporting News is reporting that Suns brass aren’t getting the hint, suggesting that a trade of Isaiah Thomas will give the team two months to convince Dragic to stay.
All of this makes it very difficult for the Suns to make a move on Dragic, of course—and the team still does not want to pull the trigger on a deal that would send Dragic away, a source told Sporting News. Dragic has a player option that allows him to be a free agent this summer.
While offers are coming in on Dragic, then, the Suns are actively seeking to move guard Isaiah Thomas first, the source said, operating under the hope that if they can make such a deal, they will have the remaining two months of the season to persuade Dragic to stay with the Suns as a free agent.
If the Suns do keep Dragic, they would be able to offer him a bigger contract in free agency in July than other teams.
But from the way Dragic spoke on Wednesday, it appears he is ready to cut ties with the team altogether, and that a mending of fences is not in the offing. Dragic’s representatives met with the Suns on Tuesday to inform them of his unhappiness.
It’s hard to feel bad for the Suns, who targeted Thomas all summer long, despite having Dragic and Eric Bledsoe already on the roster.
