The likelihood that Michael Sam will actually achieve his dream of being an NFL player seems to be dwindling with every opportunity that he receives. Sam was one of hundreds of players to attend the NFL’s first ever Veteran’s Combine for players who have aspirations of getting back into the NFL. While at the combine, Sam ran the 40 yard dash at a turtle’s pace of 5.10 and 5.07. Those times were slower than any of the times registered by DE’s at the 2015 rookie combine, and even slower than his own 2014 combine results.
All this really does is defunct the myth that Michael Sam is not in the NFL because of a growing sense of homophobia amongst the NFL community. That simply is not true. at 6’1 and weighing only 260 pounds, Sam’s lack of athletic ability is more of a contributing factor to his not being on an NFL roster than anything to do with his sexuality.
“I am very confident I will be playing football somewhere,” Sam said during a brief availability with reporters on the sidelines
Sam even went as far to not rule out potentially playing in the CFL for the 2015 season. After spending the 2014 season in training camp with the Rams and then being waived at the final cut before the 53 man roster, Sam was then added to the practice squad of the Dallas Cowboys, where he was released in December. It appears that Michael Sam is currently more worried about his Dancing With the Stars career than training for last chances to get back into the NFL. The fact that Sam is willing to play in the CFL is a good sign that he has not given up on his dreams just yet, but at this point, a lucid dream is about as close as Sam will get to suiting up on Sundays.
