Detroit Lions had the 12th ranked offense in terms of passing yards last season and 17th ranked offense in touchdowns last season. However this season Lions offense coordinator Joe Lombardi wants Matthew Stafford to take more chances.
“Our biggest thing is in order to win football games, you got to first not lose them And I thought he played smart football almost to a fault. We’ll look for him to take a few more chances this year with the football. He’s got the arm to do it, and the receivers to throw it to.”
Lombardi brings up a good point, the Lions have a lot of money tied up with the offense and possibly the best wide receiver in the league. I think what the great QB’s are able to do is understand the strengths and weaknesses of their receivers in order to exploit defenses. The Lions don’t want Stafford becoming a gunslinger but more intelligent risk particularly in the red zone might go a long way. Lions were able to make the playoffs last season mostly on the strength of the defense but Stafford was pretty good against Dallas throwing for 323 yards but for 1 touchdown and 1 interception.
