A matchup between Ohio State and Oklahoma would typically be set for the College Football Playoff. Instead, these two heavyweights will square off in Week 3 in Norman, Oklahoma, and as expected, fans are going to have to pay up if they want to attend this highly anticipated contest.
It’s been the tale of two seasons for these national powers. Oklahoma lost its opener to Houston, 33-23. Quarterback Baker Mayfield was stymied by Houston’s ferocious defensive line, so they’ll look to move Mayfield out of the pocket to develop a rhythm in this main event encounter. Meanwhile, Ohio State has cruised to two straight victories and with JT Barrett under center, the Buckeyes have the makings of another run at the College Football Playoff. However, it’s going to be costly for those interesting in attending, as Ohio State vs. Oklahoma tickets start at $284 on Razorgator. It wouldn’t be surprising to see tickets increase on the secondary market leading up to kickoff. Fortunately, fans can at least save considerable money with their Oklahoma Memorial Stadium parking on ParkWhiz.com, which offers numerous options all around the venue.
While Ohio State is known for dynamic play on offense, its defense was equally impressive last season. The Buckeyes ranked 22nd in rushing defense (127 ypg), 16th in passing defense (184 ypg), second in scoring defense (15.1 ppg), and ninth in total defense (311 ypg). Ohio State lost nine starters in the NFL Draft, which included Joey Bosa and Darron Lee, but welcomed one of the nation’s best recruiting classes. There will be a lot of pressure on inexperienced starters to put pressure on Mayfield and also to figure out a way to slow down running backs Samaje Perine and Joe Mixon. If Ohio State’s defense can limit Mayfield’s explosive plays, they will be in position to win this ballgame.
On the other hand, Oklahoma’s offense may be as equally, if not more, talented. Despite a tough first game against Houston, Mayfield is still a Heisman Trophy hopeful and has proven that he can make big plays. Expect Perine and Mixon to take some pressure off of Mayfield and keep Ohio State’s talented defensive line at bay.
This game may ultimately come down to which team can limit turnovers and control the clock. Oklahoma boasts the more experienced roster, but coach Bob Stoops has had trouble in matchups against national powers. Last year’s College Football Playoff game against Clemson is a key example of this narrative that now surrounds Stoops. It’s just one of the handful of key storylines that has this Sooners-Buckeyes tilt positioned as one of the most anticipated games early on in the campaign.
