I tell this story often about how as a young teen I got into some trouble and how it was a clear issue of racism of why I was being punished.
At that age I couldn’t comprehend how I could get in trouble for something I didn’t do just because some white people said I did it.
My uncle pulled me aside and told me something I think about almost daily.
“Bobby when you walk out the door, you already behind 14-0 in the game of life because you are black. You can still win the game, just don’t make the deficit worse.”
At a young age and knowing I loved sports, he spoke to me in terms I understood. It still rings true today, maybe you have some advantages in life, but it is never an equal playing field when you step out of that door.
Gregg Popovich knows the deal and essentially said the same thing while speaking on white privilege.
