Today is July 1st, which is also known as national Let’s Laugh At The Mets Till 2035 day.
Many of you are wondering about this whole ordeal between the Mets and Bobby Bonilla. The Mets made some mistakes and because they bought out Bonilla’s contact back in 2000 at an 8%, they agreed to pay him $1,193,248.20 on every July 1st. During the same time, the Mets were investing with Bernie Madoff and we all know how that played out. It was a terrible investment. Bonilla is the clear winner with this odd deal.
Ron Darling weighed in on this topic while at an event with Citibank and he was full of laughs in regards to Bonilla. We asked him, “What do you think about this whole ‘Bobby Bonilla Day?” Here’s what he had to say:
Whoa! Is that today? I think they’re just doing it to embarrass the owners. It’s so funny that they have to pay him till 2035.
Well, that’s a classic answer. Here’s how ESPN weighed in on his salary compared to the current players. Feel free to laugh.
