I wasn’t going to write about this, but Cowboy fan has spoken and asked for my opinion which is pretty clear.
Bryant should carry the pads. He has a huge chip on his shoulder about what went down at Oklahoma State with him losing his eligibility and then his draft stock plummeting. So he has a me against the world attitude. It isn’t a big deal to carry the pads and honestly I don’t think Bryant would have a problem with it if it wasn’t Roy Williams doing the majority of the chirping about it. Here is what Roy had to say:
“Everybody has to go through it,” Williams said. “I had to go through it. No matter if you’re a No. 1 pick or the 7,000th pick, you’ve still got to do something when you’re a rookie.
“I carried pads. I paid for dinners. I paid for lunches. I did everything I was supposed to do, because I didn’t want to be that guy.”
What would “step two” be?
“We’ll find out. Definitely going to find out,” Williams said. “I don’t know. I’ve seen guys take people’s credit cards and go fill up their cards and wife’s cards and everything. There’s a lot of dirt that goes on in that locker room.”
In the immortal words of me, Roy is being a “Moist Dude”. He has been acting moist ever since Miles Austin supplanted him as the Cowboys’ #1 receiver. He has been whining ever since the Cowboys’ drafted Dez Bryant.
This isn’t about pads, this is about Roy Williams trying to convince himself he is still #1 when in reality his future at best will be as the #3 receiver on the Cowboys.
He isn’t going to take Miles Austin top spot on the depth chart and Bryant is already establishing himself as a legitmately threat to take his starting position.
It is my assumption Williams will be more of a nuisance than a benefit to the Cowboys’ roster and if Bryant proves he can handle the starting position Williams should be cut. He isn’t worth the headache and more importantly he has proven he can’t produce.
It is more about Williams’ ego than any rookie ritual. In his mind he was the most popular girl in school until Becky transferred in and now he is just a has been.
The fact is Roy the cool kids don’t want to sit at your table anymore, so it really doesn’t matter where you put your pads at.
