This is one expansion of the rules that I like.
The NBA at times can turn into a “whine” fest on every single foul call and why I can understand to some extent, because many believe the refs are crooked or show favoritism, it is isn’t very pleasing to watch a 6’6′ 220 pound NBA player cry like a 2 year old who pacifier you just took.
It is an emotional game and I ask the refs to try to understand the difference between emotion and crying (not sure if they can do it). Here are the new expanded rules for technical fouls:
Referees have been instructed to call a technical for:
• Players making aggressive gestures, such as air punches, anywhere on the court.
• Demonstrative disagreement, such as when a player incredulously raises his hands, or smacks his own arm to demonstrate how he was fouled.
• Running directly at an official to complain about a call.
• Excessive inquiries about a call, even in a civilized tone.
In addition, referees have been instructed to consider calling technicals on players who use body language to question or demonstrate displeasure, or say things like, “Come on!” They can also consider technicals for players who “take the long path to the official”, walking across the court to make their case.
Some reactions will not be penalized, Johnson said. “Heat of the moment” reactions, like a defensive player briefly raising his hands to show he had proper position, will be acceptable.
Johnson also said players showing frustration with themselves will not be penalized, and players will still be able to discuss the game with the referees.
In essence if you are upset with a call, yell at yourself as oppose to an official.
If called to the letter of the law, Tim Duncan and Kobe Bryant will both have 82 technicals by the end of the year.
I think it is just better for the fans, hopefully the refs don’t abuse the power (like they did with those 1st class airline tickets) that is my only worry. If called correctly it will cut down on some of the silliness that goes on during the game. If called incorrectly I would be not shocked is a ref gets punched in the first.
NBA action it is FANTASTIC.
