Osi Umenyiora: I Regret the way I Handled my Contract Situations in the Past

New York Giants defensve end Osi Umenyiora wants to be able to play his whole career as a member of the Giants. With the Giants fighting for their playoff lives, if they don’t win their final two games they could be the last for Osi in Giants blue. His contract is up after the 2012 season, and the Giants may now want to re-sign the end that has been known to publicly complain about his contract situation.

Osi knows he has been known to complain about his money, and regrets the way he handled the situations in the past. He recently elaborated to USA Today Sports.

Yes, a lot of regrets. I completely went about it the wrong way,” the two-time Pro Bowl defensive end said, adding: “Honestly, if I would’ve handled it differently, it wouldn’t even be a question about finishing my career here or not. But I didn’t.

If I would’ve gone about it quietly and not said anything, I think I would’ve really got what I wanted. But the fact I came out and was open, speaking and talking all the time, that’s what pushed them into this situation.”

Hindsight is always 20/20, so from that perspective I am glad Osi sees some of the errors in his past ways.

I personally never have a problem with a football player attempting to get his money because the extreme violence of the game indicates that it can end for any player at any moment.

But, I do feel there is a time and place for voicing concerns over a contract. And a limit to how much you should do so before you just let the situation play out on its own. After all the complaining Osi tends to do over contracts, we’ll see if the Giants want to bring him back next season.
