Albert Pujols Says His Foot Is ‘Hurting Real Bad’

So there does appear to be a chink in King Albert’s armor, afterall.

Albert Pujols is nursing a nasty case of plantar fasciitis as his struggling Angels team tries to stay afloat in the early part of the season.

Pujols revealed to Los Angeles Times reporter Bill Shaikin “I’m dying,” and then he added “I’m hurting real bad.” The 33-year-old first baseman is slated to spend the majority of his time playing DH as he recovers from the injury.

The ailment causes an inflammation of tissue that stretches across the bottom of the foot, making movement very difficult. The most effective treatment is simply staying off of it. Angels GM Jerry Dipoto said that they will manage Pujols’ injury through treatment and will continue to let Pujols play until he cannot tolerate the discomfort.

“We’ve discussed every alternative imaginable,…We’ve consulted with specialists. He is particularly tough, mentally and physically. He’s handling it as well as you can.”

Through it all Pujols is managing to get the work done batting .322 with  11 RBI and an OBP of .431. However, the Angels must be nervous that their 33 year old slugger is already suffering from a nagging injury, and he’s got 9 years left on his contract.

Time will only tell how soon Pujols will return to the infield.
