I’m a native of SEC country. I love the passionate college football fans, and because of them I get irritated when people say things like “Atlanta isn’t a sports city” when Atlanta is the de facto capital of the conference given the large number of SEC alums who live and work there.
However, the collective passion shared by SEC football fans for their teams all too often leads to ignorance. Check out this recent twitter exchange between a Tennessee fan and Vanderbilt offensive line/run game coordinator Herb Hand that Hand forwarded to Tennessee head coach Butch Jones in a text message (courtesy of SECRant.com via CoachingSearch.com):
Can’t say I disagree with Coach Hand too much. I’m all for a thriving rivalry (yes Vols fans, right now you’re forced to acknowledge Vanderbilt as a real rival), but you’re doing too much when you personally attack a coach’s spouse.
Unfortunately, I don’t expect keyboard gangsters like this Tennessee fan to go away anytime soon.
