From a business standpoint it makes perfect sense for Carmelo Anthony to opt out of his contract next year, so he can sign a max deal.
The question begs who will he sign the max deal with? Frank Isola from the New York Times, believes that Lakers will be strong contenders for his services.
The All-Star forward can become a free agent on July 1, and he will almost certainly opt out of his contract because it makes financial sense.
The Knicks can offer Anthony the most money but the Los Angeles Lakers will be players in the free-agent market next summer and there has already been talk of Anthony joining Kobe Bryant, and even Anthony and LeBron James joining forces in the purple and gold.
Carmelo says that he hasn’t thought about what he is going to do (most likely a lie), but he is still a long way away from having to make a decision.
There are a lot of things that could happen between now and next summer. But, if the Knicks flame out again don’t be surprised if he takes his talents elsewhere, because he has acknowledged his window for winning a championship is closing.
