The Florida Gators are adding to the bad rap they’ve been getting during the off season with the entire buzz around former Gator Aaron Hernandez’s murder trial. The Palm Beach Post is reporting that 6 Gator players have been suspended for the season opener against Toledo, 2 of which apparently failed drug tests. Star CB Loucheiz Purifoy and backup WR Latroy Pittman are the two that reportedly have not passed their drug tests.
In addition to Purifoy and Pittman, suspensions have been handed down to starting LB Antonio Morrison, DT’s Darious Cummings and Jaynard Boswick, as well as OL Quinteze Williams. The University of Florida hasn’t confirmed these suspensions, and it is curious that earlier this week head Coach Will Muschamp said that Morrison was to be the only player suspended.
It will be interesting to see what Muschamp plans to do with the players that failed their drug tests. Purifoy is one of the nation’s top cornerbacks. With the highly anticipated matchup against the Miami Hurricanes coming up in week 2 of the season, it’s hard pressed that the team would want Canes QB Stephen Morris to have a free for all on one side of the field.
