It’s been nearly two years since UFC Bantamweight Champion, Dominick Cruz, has defended his title due to a torn ACL. Cruz underwent a second procedure, in December 2012, after his body rejected first surgery. Now, the Interim Bantamweight Champion, Renan Barao, will defend the title this Saturday vs. Eddie Wineland at UFC 165. UFC president Dana White has stated that this will be the last time the Interim title will be defended, which means if Cruz can’t defend the title in early 2014, he may be stripped
“It’s getting to the point now where it’s just like, if he can’t fight at the beginning of the year, we’ve got to pull the trigger. It’s been two years. A lot of people think we’re crazy for holding up the title this long, but it’s a tough thing to do to take a title away from somebody. It’s hard to do.”
Dana White has been more than fair in allowing Cruz to hold on to the Title for nearly two years without defending it. Injury shouldn’t be a reason one should be stripped of a title, but if Cruz is good to go in 2014, he should defend his title against the winner of Barao-Wineland, so the Bantamweight title can finally be unified.
