Rumors have been flying for awhile now that the New York Knicks were interested in point guard Rajon Rondo from the Boston Celtics. While they haven’t ever materialized, now we find out that Carmelo himself is trying to get Rondo on board with New York. At least, if you believe their high school head coach.
Both Carmelo and Rondo went to Oak Hill Academy so they both know the head coach Steve Smith. The interesting thing though, is what Smith admitted to USA Today while talking about Rondo’s return from injury.
JJ: Are you confident that he’ll be just as good, if not better, coming off of the ACL tear?
SS: No, I think he should be fine. He took a long time off and he’s rehabbed the right way. Whether he stays in Boston or not who knows. I know, talking to Melo , he’s recruiting Rajon to come to New York. Melo thinks he’ll come, too. You never know about that stuff though. I think either way, Rajon will be fine.
I’m sure Carmelo and Rajon will never admit this publicly so don’t expect them to. But it also might not necessarily be fair that we hear about private conversations between two friends.
Regardless, we’re seeing more and more that the Big 3 in Miami have created a trend. Teaming up with other stars to better the chances of a championship. Like with the rumors that the Big 3 initially constructed their idea to play together at the 2008 Olympics, we’re seeing that players are having these type of conversations privately.
