Three Texas A&M football players traveling in the same vehicle—Edward Pope, Gavin Stansbury and Howard Matthews Jr.—were all arrested late Thursday night in College Station after a traffic stop revealed all three had outstanding warrants, according to KTBX.com.
College Station Police stopped a 2008 Pontiac on Texas Avenue, around 11:40 p.m. Thursday, for an expired registration. Edward Pope, a sophomore wide receiver, was driving. He pulled into the Freebird’s parking lot. When police ran his license, they discovered Pope was wanted on a College Station municipal warrant for Failure to Appear. So, they arrested him.
Pope requested one of his two passengers – Gavin Stansbury or Howard Matthews Jr. – be allowed to take the car home instead of it being towed. In order to do so, police had to first make sure Stansbury or Matthews have a valid driver’s license.
Police ran Stansbury’s license first. Turns out, the senior defensive lineman was wanted in Harris County on assault charges.
When police ran Matthews’ license, it showed the senior defensive back was wanted on three municipal warrants – Speeding, Failure to Exhibit Driver’s License and Failure to Appear.
The school’s athletic department released a statement following the arrests.
“We are continuing to gather information. Gavin Stansbury was initially suspended from all athletic activities, but has since been reinstated to the team.
Howard Matthews and Ed Pope were not suspended and are still members of the football team.”
