HBO seems to be seeing one of their marquee summer fights dissolve before their eyes. Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin is arguably HBO’s best chance at a star outside of Manny Pacqiauo but his coming of age fight against the popular Julio Cesar Chavez Jr looks to be unlikely.
Golovkin has never been a fighter content with waiting around for an opponent, so a fight with Daniel Geale seems to be in the works.
“We’re in negotiations with Golovkin and HBO to try and put the Geale-Golovkin fight together,” Geale’s manger Bill Treacy told AAP.
… “I’m very disappointed about [the Macklin cancellation], but it’s happened to me before early on in my career,” Geale told AAP. “It’s probably put me in a position for a huge fight in a few months so I’m looking forward and staying positive. I want to have another world title by the end of the year.”
This fight is larger than a fight against Macklin for Geale but it is also an almost guaranteed loss. Golovkin’s power is off the charts and HBO is going to waste his prime if they can’t find him upper echelon opponents to fight soon.
