Amir Khan still has his hopes set on a May 2015 Mayweather fight but he knows he can’t go through another winter of inactivity is he hopes to get it. So Khan is on the hunt for a “Tickover fight.”
I’m not familiar with british lingo but it’s safe to assume Khan is insinuating that he wants an easy fight to keep him active and buy time until Floyd comes a’knocking. That’d be fine if the 2 names he’s put out for possible opponents weren’t Devon Alexander (26-2, 14 KOS) and Robert Guerrero (32-2, 18 KOs).
“Those fights (with Mayweather and Pacquiao) can definitely happen in the future but I need a ‘tickover fight’ in December,” Khan told the BBC.
“I would like it to be in England and I am trying to get it over here. If not it could be America, or even Dubai.”
“We were looking at Manny Pacquiao, but that fell through. We looked at Mayweather but that didn’t happen because of Ramadan.”
“Opponent-wise we have looked at a few names, such as Devon Alexander or Robert Guerrero, but we have not confirmed anything just yet. We have to make sure they are available at the time,” he added.
Guerrero is a fighter who’s only decisive loss has come at the hands of Mayweather and Alexander is a fighter who dominated Marcos Maidana even more so than Mayweather. Those aren’t two guys you just schedule for a “tickover.” Khan must’ve seen what a quality win did for Maidana and has committed himself to doing whatever it takes to land that “May Day” fight.
