Brandon Rios vs Diego Chaves was an all out slugfest, but honestly would you expect anything else from a ‘Bam Bam’ Rios fight?
For 8 rounds Brandon Rios and Diego Chaves stood toe-to-toe and exchanged punches. Most of Rios were aimed to the body of Chaves while Chaves was trying hard to work the jab. Despite the constant action the fight would have to be described as sloppy. Twice the referee had to take points away from Chaves for excessive holding and once Rios was docked a point for tripping Chaves during a clinch.
Things unraveled in the 9th round when Chaves took Rios to the ground in a head lock and the two had to be separated. Immediately after that Chaves targeted Rios’ eyes in a clinch and was disqualified. At the time of the stoppage two judges had Chaves up by a point and one had Rios winning by a point.
When the DQ was announced Rios became irate and attempted to charge Chaves in the corner several times. Trainers had to step in between the two fighters.
The result had to be disappointing for Rios who was coming off of two losses and was hoping to impress. A DQ win doesn’t really put him back into the ranks of the elite boxers. This means he’ll likely have to take another small fight to prove himself and risk losing out on a title shot in early 2015.
On another note, Shane Mosley Jr. was the de facto co-main event tonight even though Shane Jr. entered with only one other pro fight.
The family name is what gave him this platform but trust me its his skill that will make him great. Mosley Jr. wasted no time at all handling Jerome Jones. The fight was stopped only 1:25 into the first round and Jones had been knocked down once already before the stoppage.
Mosley Jr. has all of the raw tools that his father possessed coupled with added strength and athleticism. It’ll be great to watch him develop into a premier fighter.
