Manny Pacquiao and Chris Aglieri came into The Wall Street Journal during my internship today with WSJSports. Below is a Q&A we conducted…..seems like Pacquaio has moved on from even thinking about fighting Floyd Mayweather.
Do you still want to fight Floyd Mayweather?
PACQUIAO: Before I was always thinking about that fight. But, now I think I have to move on and focus on other fighters because I don’t think he will fight.
ARUM: Let’s be frank about this, this is not a rocket scientist thing. There was an impediment that we thought, because Floyd fought for one network, Showtime, and Manny for HBO. There’s no longer an impediment, the two networks have found a way to do the fight to satisfy both of them and satisfy any legal type of situation that they have. Manny Pacquiao is sitting here, will tell you, and he is a very religious guy on a stack of bibles, that he would like nothing else than to fight Floyd Mayweather.
There’s one man stopping that fight and that’s Floyd Mayweather. Yesterday, after knowing that Manny Pacquiao has a contract with my company, Top Rank, that lasts through 2016, he has the nerve to say that the only way he will fight Manny Pacquiao is if Pacquiao signs a promotional contract with his company. Now what does that tell you? That tells you he doesn’t want to fight. Listen, we’ve been down the road all the time.
Mayweather values his zero, his undefeated record more than life itself. Remember now this isn’t a guy that has a lot of depth, this is a guy who lives on the surface as I see and being undefeated for him is everything.
