Try to follow along with this story, it is a bit complicated.
Davonte’ Spruill, 18, was a freshman linebacker who was a walk-on member of the ECU football team and a graduate of Plymouth High School. He was arrested along with two others after what ECU Police described as a complex case of larceny and retaliation.
ECU police say Spruill and 18-year-olds Bryant Robinson and Rashad Pinner are charged with with felony second-degree kidnapping and misdemeanor simple assault. Robinson is a student at ECU. The university says Pinner was registered for the fall semester at Pitt Community College but is not currently enrolled.
Lt. Chris Sutton says the series of events started late Sunday when three students gave cash to Bryant Robinson to buy marijuana. However, Sutton says Robinson pocketed the cash instead of buying drugs for the students. The students sought revenge, Sutton says, and took items from Robinson’s room in Jones Hall. They sent Robinson pictures of the things they stole, telling Robinson they would return his belongings if he returned their money.
Sutton says Robinson enlisted Spruill and Pinner to join him in confronting one of the students who tried to buy the drugs. A fight broke out in Jones Hall, and the student that Robinson, Spruill and Pinner went to confront was assaulted. After that, Robinson, Spruill and Pinner took the victim to another dorm where they forced the first victim to assault one of the people who was involved in stealing things from Robinson’s room. That student ended up going to the hospital to be checked out for minor injuries.
Sprull was dismissed from the team for his role in the plot.
