Barry Bonds has been spending part of his retirement tutoring hitters throughout the MLB, and it appears he has a new student.
According to John Shea of the San Francisco chronicle, Bonds has been working on the comeback of New York Yankees third-baseman Alex Rodriguez:
Bonds’ latest pupil has been out of the game since 2013, has hip issues and turns 40 in July, but Rodriguez is gung ho about returning to the Yankees and is all ears around Bonds. A-Rod posted on Instagram two photos of him swinging a bat with these words: “Starting the year in the cage.”
If A-Rod is indeed serious about playing any sort of serious role for the Yankees this season, taking advice and workouts from hitters the caliber of a Barry Bonds can only help. However, all the preparation in the world won’t help a 40-year old with major hip issues stay on the field and off the DL.
Not saying a glorious A-Rod comeback is totally out of the question, but I wouldn’t be expecting anything majestic.
