Donnie Tyndall is out as Tennessee’s men’s basketball coach, according to a report from CBSSports.com early Friday morning.
UT officials confirmed the news.
The dismissal is related to the ongoing NCAA investigation into the Southern Miss program Tyndall coached from 2012 to 2014.
As CBSSports.com first reported Thursday morning, NCAA officials detailed for Tennessee’s administration on Thursday afternoon the allegations it plans to formally levy against Tyndall when it sends a notice of allegations to USM in the coming weeks. A source told CBSSports.com Tennessee’s administration would’ve preferred Tyndall remain in Knoxville, ideally; they liked him as their coach. But the punishment the NCAA is expected to assign Tyndall convinced athletic director Dave Hart that keeping Tyndall was simply impractical going forward, a source said.
“It is disappointing that we have to take this action,” Hart said. “It is highly likely that Coach Tyndall will face significant penalties at the conclusion of the NCAA’s infractions process. We believe this decision is in the best interests of the University of Tennessee.”
