Michael Sam: Other Gay NFL Players Don’t Have The Courage I Have

michael-sam-2

For someone who is always says it is all about football, why are the majority of Michael Sam quotes about being gay, other people being gay and if being gay is the reason he isn’t playing football?

This isn’t groundbreaking news, I know several gay NFL football players. For the majority of people in the world it isn’t a big deal. Yes, there are trolls, haters and homophobes out there, but sadly there will always be a portion of the population that are racist and prejudice to people who aren’t like them. Here is what Sam had to say.

“I am not the only gay person in the NFL,” Sam said in Dallas on Thursday, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “I’m just saying there is a lot of us. I respect the players that did reach out to me and had the courage to tell me that they were also gay, but they do not have the same courage as I do to come out before I even played a down in the NFL.

“The players who have reached out to me and told me about their sexual orientation, it just means a lot. But I will never say anything about who they are, what teams they are [on]. I’m just saying there’s some famous people, and I’m not the only one.”

Way to put yourself on a pedestal there. The reality of the situation is other gay athletes probably don’t want to deal with the attention, they want to focus on just playing the game. There are certain things in all our private lives we like to keep personal. Is Michael Sam courageous or did he see a way for himself to become famous? Only Sam knows the answer to that.
