Mayweather has a tendency to cause fighters to overthink in the ring and that drops their punch count. I think one of the reasons Maidana had a little more success against Mayweather especially in the first fight was because he just threw punches and didn’t care where they landed.
Judges at times care more about activity than accuracy. It makes sense that Pacquiao’s strategy will be to outwork Mayweather, while being more accurate than the wilder Maidana. To combat that, Mike Tyson says Mayweather will have to be more active.
“He has to fight. If he’s not going to score, he is going to lose the round. Also, if he is laid back, he is going to lose the round,” Tyson said. “Floyd doesn’t throw near a hundred punches per round. He is more of a scientific fighter. He sits around and pulls it. I don’t think he is going to be able to play that plot. This guy is all over your face. He moves and feints. He is in perpetual motion.”
There is a risk of course, because the more active you are the more open you are to be hit. This fight has always been a chess match and it will be interesting to see how it plays out.
