Burress was indicted on Thursday on charges that he didn’t pay nearly $48,000 in New Jersey income taxes, the Times of Trenton is reporting.
The former wide receiver filed his 2013 income tax returns electronically, but his payment of $47,903 was not received, the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office claims, according to the Times report. Burress reportedly never responded to attempts made by the Division of Revenue and Enterprise Services to contact him.
The 37-year-old is facing a pair of third-degree charges, the Times reports. Burress faces one count of issuing a bad check or electronic funds transfer, and another count of failing to pay state tax. The charges carry a maximum penalty of five years in state prison and a $15,000 fine.
Burress served 21 months in prison after accidentally shooting himself in the thigh with an unlicensed Gun at a midtown Manhattan nightclub in 2009.
