I’m not sure if it’s a family matter or a personal decision, but Michael Sam’s CFL career has been put on hold. Sam has left the Montreal Alouettes training camp for personal reasons.
The team says the rookie defensive end was given special permission to return home to Texas.
The Als are keeping the “nature of his decision” confidential.
Sam’s departure from the team comes a few weeks after he became the first openly gay player to sign in the CFL. Montreal officials indicated that they are giving him “all the time and support needed” and are keeping the door open for him to return when he feels ready.
I’m not sure that will ever happen.
The Alouettes play their first pre-season game Saturday night in Quebec City.
