Cam Newton can do no wrong right now, nothing the media says really effects him anymore. His team is 13-0, he’s playing at an MVP level and the Cam-wagon has reached max capacity. Cam for years was called immature and selfish. They said he wasn’t a leader and didn’t know how to read defenses. It was even said that Cam often allowed his body language to get the best of him which effected his teammates. Not much has changed about Cam personally, he is the same person yet the perception of him is completely different.
“I think a lot of it has to do with winning,” Newton said on Wednesday. “I can tell you that. If I was doing a lot of things I’m doing right now and we weren’t winning, I’d get ate up and spit back out — especially with the dancing that some people approve of, some people don’t.
“I’m human. I understand that winning sweeps a lot of stuff up under the rug. But my influence hasn’t changed. I was doing this when we were 3-8-1.”
The Panthers’ season seemed all but over before it even started. After losing star wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin to a knee injury, there were tons of questions about the team yet Cam has been able to lead his team to a 13-0 record and 17 straight regular season wins.
“Nothing has ever changed,” Newton said. “What I don’t like is how people make it seem like, ‘What’s new? What’s different?’ Jonathan [Stewart’s] always been a goofball… Hell, that whole locker room has been full of characters.
“It’s a good situation to be in. I don’t want to start creating negative things to talk about. We’re talking about good things, and people are making a story of good things. Celebrating.”
Winning is everything. People hated seeing Cam on the sideline with a towel over his head or how he would take touchdown balls from his teammate to give to fans. Cam is still doing both those things and everyone loves him now. To be honest, I’m glad that Cam did it his way. He hasn’t changed to make anyone else happy. As long as his teammate and coaches accept and believe in him, everything else will fall in place.
