The Carmichael Show, NBC’s latest runaway hit based on the family life of comedian Jerrod Carmichael, returns to TV on March 13th for a second complete season and not a moment too soon. Making a huge splash in its inaugural season Carmichael entertained viewers with a fresh an authentic point-of-view that made you feel the better for watching. With its well-written episodes, and talented ensemble cast, the sitcom looks to make an even bigger impact its sophomore season as it continues to airing out topics that are relevant and far deserving of a platform bigger than your local barbershop or town hall meeting. Devoting time to topical issues like gun control, religious practices for non-married couples, gender assignment and more in season one, take the time this week to binge watch and get up to speed on a show that should be part of your “appointment TV” schedule.
Ahead of the season opener, I had a chance to visit the Fox Studios set and chat with cast members Tiffany Haddish and Lil Rel Mowery (Bobby and Nakesha) and David Allen Grier and Loretta Devine (Joe and Cynthia) to get the scoop on what to expect in the bigger and better season two. While Grier and Devine are veterans of the cast, newcomers Haddish and Mowery along with Jerrod Carmichael (self) and Amber Stevens West (Maxine) are holding their own as integral parts of the show’s success.
In season two will Bobby finally stand up for himself during conflicts with his “better brother” Jerrod? Is Bobby going to reunite with Nakesha? Will the family patriarchs maintain their ability to uplift and educate their children while remaining in harmony with each other as they tackle additional difficult topics like gentrification? You’ll have to tune in and fight out.
