According to reports, Arron Afflalo and Derrick Williams will both explore the free agency this summer. What does this mean for the Knicks?
The frustration with the Knicks was major last season. From a scandal involving their ex-coach who was fired to flat out not being able to win games, the team is looking for a turn around. Phil Jackson definitely has his hands full when it comes to the Knickerbockers.
Arron Afflalo opting out of his contract isn’t too surprising since it was a rumor back in April but Derrick Williams is a bit of an eyebrow raiser. Afflalo only spent one season with the Knicks and that was enough for him. Before you’re left lamenting your players, there is good news from this. There is $30 million now in cap space which means that the Knicks could go after that big name player you’ve always dreamed of. Williams on the other hand was a seesaw player. One night he would score 15+ points and other nights, he would channel his inner Kevin Love and score about 2-6 points.
ESPN reporter Ian Begley confirmed this news.
Arron Afflalo, Derrick Williams have told the Knicks that they will not opt in to their contracts for 2016-17, per league sources.

For those of who are waiting to see something similar happen in regards to Jose Calderon, I would say to not hold your breath for too long. But perhaps a trade of some nature may occur with the point guard.
