The Yankees are committed to keeping Alex Rodriguez on their roster until his contract expires.
The Yankees are a much different team than they were a week ago. They’re getting younger and got rid of Aroldis Chapman, Andrew Miller, Carlos Beltran and Ivan Nova for a haul of prospects. This is a team that is not used to being sellers and throwing up the white flag at the trade deadline, but times have changed.
The only player left that wasn’t a part of the purge is Alex Rodriguez so the team can continue to get younger and Yankees general manager Brian Ashman gives his explanation.
“First and foremost, you just have to flat-out admit, it is not easy to eat — meaning release — that kind of money,” Cashman told ESPN Radio. “It’s not something you come to a quick decision on. You see players — and I don’t want to name them because they are still playing — but there are players around the game who are on big contracts that have been well-below-average players now for many years, not just a year.”
A-Rod has one season left remaining where he will be 42 and owed $21 million. Yankees are better off just sitting him on the bench then letting another team pick him up, if any team is interested at all, to play against them.
