On the campus of Eastern Michigan University, black students were left a message from racists vandals.
The Eastern Echo, the campus-wide news paper, posted Tuesday on Facebook that a female staff member found the messages “KKK” and “Leave Nigger” spray painted on an exterior Julia Ann King Hall, a dorm located on campus. School officials are having the matter looked into and issued the following statement.
“The University strongly condemns such a racist and thoughtless act, which runs completely counter to the values and welcoming environment of our highly diverse Eastern Michigan University community,”
“Rest assured, we will investigate this criminal act to our fullest abilities and will advise our campus community on our progress,”
Despite this incident, there will be people who read this and ask, “what did the students do,” or say, “America isn’t racist”, or “it’s just a harmless prank.” Each day we see increasing examples of black people being targeted in perceived safe spaces and being made to feel inferior or killed without provocation.
Let’s hope the Eastern Michigan University Administration is sincere in their efforts to investigate fully and not stifle affected students when they protest or make their dissatisfaction known.
