For the first time in a while, it appears the MVP race will have several legitimate candidates. Names such as Russell Westbrook, Kevin Durant, Kawhi Leonard, Damian Lillard, LeBron James, James Harden and Anthony Davis come to mind.
Considering how LeBron affects the game in so many different areas, he will always have a chance, but he’s already won the award four times. At this stage of his career, it’s all about winning championships. However, his partner in crime may have a great chance at the award.
Through three games, Kyrie is averaging 25 points on 46 percent shooting from the field. When asked if Kyrie could win MVP this year, LeBron had this to say.
“Why not?” asked James, who famously predicted last season that Irving could have MVP awards in his future. “His ability to lead a team and his ability to score and get guys involved, we’re going to continue to improve as a team, we’re going to be right up there with the league leaders in wins, so why not?
“I think the sky’s the limit for the kid. He’s only [24] years old … He hasn’t even gotten to his prime yet.”
We know Kyrie will get his points, but in order for him to receive serious consideration, he must increase his assist numbers. Thus far, he’s only averaging four dimes per game.
