Richard Sherman had a very eventful Monday night outing against the Bills that led to a mini-war of words between Pete Carroll and Rex Ryan. Sherman taunted the Bills sideline after an interception and followed that up by jumping offsides and injuring Bills kicker Dan Carpenter.
Rex was upset about Sherman’s action after losing the game and let Richard Sherman know how he felt after the game.
“I had some words,” Ryan said afterward. “I think I said, ‘You’re too good of a player to act like an ass.’ I think that’s what I said.”
Carroll responded to Ryan’s comments on his weekly radio show with the following:
“I just wish he’d coach his own team,” Carroll said. “Just coach your own guys.”
Of course Rex Ryan is not the type of person to let someone else to have the last word, so he hit back at Carroll’s comments on his weekly conference call.
“As a matter of fact I do coach my own guys and I’m proud of the team that I coach,” Ryan responded on a conference call on Tuesday. “We haven’t had the results that we shoot for every time but I’m proud of this group and yeah, I have no problem.
“I do coach my own guys but I forgot, I guess I should have asked Pete when somebody asked me a question about one of his players, I should have asked Pete about the appropriate response I guess.”
This is a classic case of coaches doing what they do and defending their respective players. Ryan went after Sherman because of the injury to Dan Carpenter, and Carroll defended Sherman reminding Ryan that it’s his job to correct Sherman. Sherman’s play on Carpenter should have drawn a flag but the officials blew the call. Combine that with losing the game and you have the reason why Rex went after Sherman.
