Bryce Petty has been patient. The Jets know what he can bring to the table. The fans want to see him but there is one thing in his way and that’s Ryan Fitzgerald’s day to day updates.
The Jets are currently 3-6. Only a miracle would help them take over and manage to head to the playoffs. A lot of things are on the line at this point. Todd Bowles’ coaching has been great but his decision making has him in hot water. Some are saying that his job may be in danger because of the quarterback calls. But this situation isn’t new since it’s sort of known that the Jets always have an issue with their quarterbacks.
Bryce Petty is just waiting to show what he can bring to the team but Ryan Fitzgerald is the Jets starting quarterback. Sunday’s game against the Rams might give Petty some sort of spotlight considering the fact that Fitzgerald is nursing a knee injury but is still listed as the starter.
“I’m definitely optimistic that I’ll be able to go out there and play,” Fitzpatrick said. “I’m going to do everything I can from now until then to make sure that that happens. It’s a knee sprain,” he said. “It’s not something I’m happy is there or feels great, but I think I’ll be OK. Now it’s just getting out there and getting comfortable. I don’t have any past experience with (the brace), so getting comfortable is probably the biggest thing.”
Petty got some field action when the Jets were facing off against the Dolphins and got a few yards added to his stats. If Fitzgerald is not ready, Bowles thinks that Petty will be ready for that start.
“I think he’s capable,” Bowles said. “It’s just a matter of Ryan’s ahead of him right now. As Bryce gets more reps we’re more comfortable with him.”
Throughout it all, Petty keeps an optimistic and humble thought too. It would be terrific to see him get a chance out there.
“All I try to do each and every day is try to be the best teammate that I can and help this team in whatever way they need, whether it’s getting first-team reps, backup, third-string. I don’t forget the time that I was kind of on the bubble of whether or not I was going to make this team.”
The Jets are looking to add another win to their record as they face the Rams on Sunday November 13. Bowles hasn’t given up on the season. Jets fans, have you?
